New Year, Better Me

How cliché. Someone using the new year to improve themselves. It’s easy to fall for the simple line “new year, new me.” What's even easier is not committing to breaking your bad habits from the year before. But why change everything when a new year rolls around? What makes it so special? There are things that we would be accomplishing anyways that we shouldn't credit to a year change, like graduating from school, right? That goes the other way too though considering time is the key to change for many people. But there are many doors and many keys. The process is different for everyone.

The thing is, there’s nothing actually different about a new year. Nothing changes apart from a few digits, maybe some gray hairs, and people behind screens announcing to the entire world that things will be different this time, that they will be different. I mean, how could one second completely transform someone into a new person? That’s simple, it can’t.

Although all of this is true, the New Year isn't all bad and (almost) everyone deserves a fresh start. If you want to change, you just have to decide you're going to. It really is that simple.

“Dissatisfaction is a great starting point, for it is right there that we have the most power, strength, and energy to push change through.”
                    David DeNotaris

Writing down your goals makes them seem more real. Keeping track of the steps towards these goals and the possible failures along the way should make it easier to stay focused and achieve them, right? Well, that's my plan. Keeping track of the changes I make in hopes of bettering myself and the life around me. Make fun if you wish, but I'm not worried about the opinions of others these days. That sounds like another dumb New Years cliché, but it's true. Just like you get to decide what you're going to change, you can also choose your outlook and how you're going to let things like words effect you.

While it is easy to forget about the growth you're capable of, hopefully holding yourself accountable and keeping tabs on your own change will do a load of good. New year, better me.
